The player’s handbook

How to play Sergeant Major

Deal sixteen cards each and a four-card kitty. The dealer’s target is eight tricks, the left seat’s five, and the right seat’s three. These targets rotate with the dealer.

After the first hand, over-trickers exchange low cards with under-trickers according to the previous hand’s surplus and deficit. A recipient returns their highest card in the same suit if it is higher; otherwise the offered card is returned.

The dealer names trump and discards four cards before taking the kitty. If an under-tricking dealer receives higher kitty cards in suits surrendered in the exchange, those cards are shown to the affected player.

Left of dealer leads. Follow suit if possible; otherwise play anything. Highest trump wins, or highest of the led suit. The first player to take twelve tricks in a single hand wins.

Rules reference

Good cards. Great company.
